Letters. When I was young, reading was my main past time if I was not outside playing. I learned of far away lands and began to dream of traveling in the meantime, I discovered the world of pen pals. I think via my cousin and then through school as a way of learning about different cultures. There used to be pen pal “classified” ads that you could subscribe to find a pen pal. Country, girl or boy? Sports? Music? Looking back at it all these years later, a precursor of personal ads ☺️😄
At one point, I was writing to people all over the USA, Australia, Germany, Zimbabwe…those are the ones I remember. Australia was from a shop teacher on a teacher exchange when I was 16. Germany was from one of those adverts and of all the people in the world, we have the same birthday but a year apart. We wrote massive letters to each other all by hand before computer. He also travelled through Europe a lot as well as internationally so I received lots of postcards He came to holiday in Canada and stayed with my family. I finally returned the favour years later when I finally went on a holiday to Germany.
I have often said that twitter and tweeps seem like the “new penpal” – you tweet with people from all over, and you get to know people with similar interests, views, sense of humour. Instead of letters, you check in via twitter or facebook, and if you are lucky, you get a chance to meet in real life feeling like you are meeting an old friend.
